Tornado, Cyclone, Hurricane

Tornados, hurricanes, and cyclones are all powerful weather phenomena that rely on the interaction between hot and cold air to move. These storms typically form when warm, moist air rises and cools, creating clouds and precipitation. As the air rises, it creates a low-pressure area that draws in cooler air from surrounding areas. This creates a rising and falling air cycle that can quickly grow into a powerful storm. The rotation of the Earth also plays a role in the movement of these storms, causing them to spin and move in specific directions. While tornados, hurricanes, and cyclones can be incredibly destructive, they also serve an essential role in regulating the Earth's climate and maintaining a balance between hot and cold air.
In this fun tag-based game, students will be hot and cold air chasing each other in a cyclonic pattern. Part of the beauty of this game is its simplicity. There is only one direction to run and only one other team to try and tag. However, this game will require stamina and grit, especially for the first runners when the game begins.

Materials:

  • An ample open space
o If inside a gym, use the perimeter volleyball lines as the playing area o If outside, use cones to make the playing area

Minimum Number of Students Needed: While four or six students can theoretically play this game, they would quickly become exhausted. A better number of students would be closer to twelve students, while an entire class would be the most fun.

Prior Knowledge: This lesson could introduce lessons on tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones, etc.
