Infection!

$3.00

The battle between pathogens and the immune system is epic and dynamic. When our immune system is working well, we pay little attention. It is not until we are sick that we realize how important our immune system is for fighting off foreign invaders. Students typically understand that the immune system fights off pathogens. Still, students can be easily confused about the differences between bacteria and viruses. What better way to understand pathogens than to become them in a game?

This Infection game includes capturing the flag, dodgeball, tag, and a fortress-style game. Students will learn the differences between bacteria and viruses, how the immune system defends the body, and the role of antibiotics in this exciting game that has something for everyone!

Materials:

·      An ample open space (such as a gym or field)

·      Jerseys or pennies to wear (two different colors)

·      Dodge balls

·      Large colored flags or jerseys (different color than the other two)

·      Basketball hoop or large container

Minimum Amount of Students Needed: This game could be played with as few as six or seven, but it works better if there is an entire class (20+).

Age: This lesson is best used with upper elementary or Middle School. However, it could be done with younger students who are more mature or in a transition classroom, like grades 3-5.
