Gifts of the Phyla
Gifts of the Phyla
The Gifts of the Phyla is a classic Montessori lesson that highlights the progression of characteristics within animals and how they aid in their survival. We call these characteristics “gifts,” and they scaffold on each other as animal type becomes more advanced. The animal kingdom is incredibly intriguing due to the distinct characteristics possessed by different phyla. What better way to observe these differences than by playing through them?
This is a capture-the-flag-style game that changes every round. The students start with significant limitations based on their playing phyla. As the game progresses, they gain a new ability, or “gift,” from the subsequent phyla until the end, which most resembles the classic Capture the Flag. Your students will love this game because with each new ability, not only does the game style change, but so does the strategy along with it. Students will have to think quickly to fully maximize their new ability each round, which makes each round new and exciting (even for your oldest students)!
