Ash Cloud
Ash Cloud
When we think of volcanoes, the first thing that comes to mind is lava. Lava is scorching and burns anything in its path. Lava is considered the most dangerous part of a volcanic eruption. Still, the gigantic ash cloud can be significantly more dangerous. An ash cloud can move at incredible speeds (especially if the wind blows hard), making them very hard to evade. The tiny particles of rock in the air make it hard to breathe. They can pollute fresh water and food, takedown electric grids, and destroy engines (even worse for airplanes). Humans may not be safe even if they find shelter. The ash accumulates quickly and may cause roof collapses and other structural damage, putting those inside in danger. Those closest to the eruption are at the highest risk. One only has to think of the legendary eruption of Pompeii to know the devastating effects of a volcanic ash cloud.
While students love volcanoes, they usually do not understand how dangerous a volcanic ash cloud can be. After the students play this game, they will better understand the full dangers of a volcanic eruption. The students will also have a lot of fun playing with the giant parachute material!
Materials:
· A large playing area (gym or outside)
· A giant rainbow play parachute
Minimum Number of Students Needed: Depending on the parachute size (and they can be pretty significant), I would suggest no less than five students for these games. The larger the parachute, the more students you will need.
Age: All Ages
